The set of lower values(3) in MNH condition.
This is an Information Brochure of the first set of stamps issued by India in the world on the Mahatma in 1948. It gives a brief description of the great life that Gandhiji lead. It is cancelled at Calcutta (now Kolkata). After India's Independence, the 1st Prime Minister, Pt.Jawaharlal Nehru had decided to issue a set of 4 stamps on Gandhiji's life in 1950 on his 81st Birth Anniversary. But because of Gandhiji's sudden demise on 30th January, 1948, India issued these 4 stamps in that same year. The set of 4 stamps were the 1st by India and the world on Gandhiji. Incidentally, these stamps were the 1st Commemorative stamps issued by Independent India on any personality. These stamps are the only stamps issued by India and the world to have had the name of GANDHI in 3 different languages, English, Hindi, and Urdu. This shows Gandhiji's love for the people of the Muslim community also. STAMP FACTS
